Reload this page in case your computer has it cached as I over write pictures frequently (I change the days date to the current one whenever I edit the page or add new pictures). I take pictures of what we are doing and the plants we grow for my free monthly newsletter. Click on the picture and it may open a larger version with more detail.

aprilcoldframesmall.jpg, aprilsignsmall.jpg
Above pictures of the coldframe in April. You can see our coldframe pictured above during other months of the year by clicking on the link below (in winter plants are stored in boxes on each side but as it warms up we will open the boxes when its warm or to water them, closing them at night). On the right is the front porch where I often sit in summer sipping a coffee I buy next door (you can see the weather proof box that has a handout inside). We rent the apartments to tenants that like being surrounded by the nursery.
www.floweringshrubfarm.com/coldfram.htm
aprilcoldboxsmall.jpg, aprilpricetagsmall.jpg
We open the cold box when its above freezing and close it when below (in spring we clean out leaves and seed that fell into the pots last fall before they were covered). When temperatures are consistantly above freezing we start using the cold box as a table with the plants that were stored inside now placed on top. When plants become available for sale I slap a price tag on and take the picture (no price tag? Not for sale yet).
aprilreddoorsmall.jpg, aprilpotinpotsmall.jpg
Through the red door is our mist propagation bench, break room and work shop. On the right are plants in 7 gallon pots that are stored in winter pot-in-pot with their roots surrounded by mulch. As the trees above this area leaf out we will pull the potted plants out and move them to a sunnier location.
aprilfantinlatoursmall.jpg, aprilalexandermackenziesmall.jpg
I pull cuttings that may have rooted from the cold box and take a picture. These cuttings were taken in September or October of 2014 and because the stems are still green indicates they are still viable. If they start growing vigorously it will be a good sign.
aprilducdecambridgesmall.jpg, aprilducdeguichesmall.jpg
aprilharisonsyellowsmall.jpg, aprilcelestialalbasmall.jpg,
I stool layer many roses in 45 gallon pots, then check to see if the layers rooted in mid summer. We have only 1 'Harisons Yellow' layered as of April 2015 but plan to layer 4 more this summer (we only propagate Harisons Yellow from layers, root cuttings and divisions). If I get 10 or 15 layers a year from this rose I think thats pretty good, often enough I dont get any. We also layer 'Celestial' alba shown above in a 45 gallon pot but take heal cuttings in September and October as well. I am thinking that when cuttings dont root maybe I'll over-write the cuttings picture with a picture of a plant in a 45 gallon pot like these two above.
aprilispahansmall.jpg, apriltuscanysmall.jpg,
aprillilacsinfieldsmall.jpg, lilacsbymailsmall.jpg
Note the yellow labels marking those that flowered (some of these get cut back and remain in the field while others are divided to be sold mail order in 1 gallon pots (above right) if they come out of dormancy and start growing vigorously. We pot them into 3 gallon pots and place them in the field under drip line. Once they flower I label it with an individually numbered yellow label with the name printed on it using a paint pen. Those that have too few stems are cut back and once they start to grow vigorously may be repotted in a larger pot (probably a 7 gallon or 15 gallon). A few may be planted in 45 gallon pots and used to provide cuttings. On the right are Lilacs in 1 gallon pots where our larger lilacs that have previously flowered and been identified have been divided for mail order. They wont be for sale until I add a price label. Or if the sell I will stick a sold tag over the price.
aprilcoldboxsmall.jpg, aprilagnessmall.jpg
We open the cold box when its above freezing and close it when below (in spring we clean out leaves and seed that fell into the pots last fall before they were covered). The box keeps rabits, mice and deer from trimming the roses (the poison in the paper cuts kill any that still get in) while protecting pets from the poison. On the right above is the Hybrid Rugosa Rose 'Agnes' (either the plant we get cuttings from in a 45 gallon pot or if we have them maybe smaller plants in 1 gallon pots).
aprilfertilizersmall.jpg, aprilfertilizingsmall.jpg
marchcutbacklilacssmall.jpg, marchcuttingbacklilacssmall.jpg
Lilacs that flowered last year but have 3 or fewer stems are cut back to around four inches, especially those that have not been requested mail order. If we get a thicket of upright stems some will be transplanted into larger pots while others may be divided next year.
marchlilacdividessmall.jpg, marchlilacdividingsmall.jpg
Lilacs are divided into 1 gallon pots and cut back to four inches. We use a sawzall to cut the root in half and sometimes into thirds or quarters. Those that come out of dormancy and grow vigorously may be sold mail order or get transplanted into a larger pot and returned to the field. Wouldn't you know that the one I take pictures of to demonstrate with would give us a hard time (frozen). We will continue next week and maybe I'll get additional pictures.
marchledain45small.jpg, aprilsnowdrops2015small.jpg
We fertilize after the time that bulbs start blooming but before the time forsythia does (roses and lilacs get a handful of Rose tone each 7 gallon pot a bit less than 1 gallon a bit more for larger pots).
aprilkazanliksmall.jpg, aprilcentifoliasmall.jpg
Above and below are roses in April (either the plant we get cuttings from in a 45 gallon pot or if we have them maybe smaller plants in 1 gallon pots).

Removed the bags from rose cuttings today. Looks like I will get around 50% rooted (4 cuttings in each pot). They are all here both those that rooted and those that didn't (see if you can tell which have rooted). I watered them with a water soluble fertilizer and will do it again in a couple of weeks. Click for a larger image.
cuttingssidesmall.jpg, cuttingstopsmall.jpg
I will over-write these two pictures frequently. When it gets warm enough I will put them on top of the table so when you look at them from the side you can see the price tag or a sold tag showing to whom it was sold. Then we will seperate them between the ownrootalbas, ownrootdamasks, ownrootrugosas etc. Click the picture for a larger image you can save as wallpaper or study more closely (check the date in the lower right hand corner to see how recently I took this picture).
ownrootdamaskssmall.jpg, aprillilacslicesmall.jpg
Copy what is painted on the side of the larger pot then divide the lilac and plant the divisions in the new pots.
aprilthefarmsmall.jpg
ownrootdamaskssmall.jpg
As Roses flower in June proving what variety they are I sort them by type; alba, gallica, damask, centifolia, hybrid rugosa, rambler, etc. and take pictures of them. I put all these pictures on my for sale page even if they are not yet for sale.
www.floweringshrubfarm.com/forsale.htm
I use these newsletters to notify potential customers when plants are ready or not because it simplifies my life immeasurably. I dont subtract people from this list unless they ask to be removed so quite a few may no longer be interested or may change what they are interested in if I email them but if its on this list I'll be checking it when adding to the newsletter.

Suzanne said on March 30, 2015 she wants 3 Monge Lilacs.
Tom said on March 29, 2015 he wants 'Autumn Damask' Rose cuttings. I replied that our propagation bench malfunctioned last year so we probably have lost the cuttings we took before September and I'm pretty sure that includes the autumn damask though I'm not sure (we are building a new mist propagation bench this year but most of our cuttings may end up being taken in September and October).
Caroline said on March 29, 2015 she wants to pick up Nadezhda, Monge, Adelaide Dunbar, Znamya Lenina and Congo Lilacs in 15 gallon pots. I think those that I have are in 3 gallon pots for $25 each but most of those in the list have not yet flowered and so they wont be for sale until they do.

Janice said on March 20, 2015 that she is interested in 'Rochester' Lilac and 'Seven Sisters', 'City of York', and Fantin Latour Roses.
Catherine said on March 17, 2015 that she would like 2 Great Maidens Blush at $15 each would be $30 + $2 handling + $18 shipping (dont send any money until I ask for it). Go to the bottom of this page and you can see a picture that shows 2 - one gallon potted roses in a flat rate priority mail box. If I root cuttings we pot them in one gallon pots, if they flower and are identified we may sell them, so I never know what I will be selling until they flower (or dont) in June.
Joseph said on March 14, 2015 that he would like 30 gallons of each of the following; Rosa centifolia (Cabbage Rose), Rosa damascena Trigintipetala Kazanlik, and Ispahan Damask Rose. He asked how we ship, how much they cost, which ones have 35 petals, and how old the plants are. I explained that those three are possibly the highest demand we have and I explained we dont sell plants until they have flowered verifying the variety. I will try to address all those points here and in subsequent newsletters mostly with pictures and links. Note each link below is a web page for each of those varieties alone and I try to add all the pictures of each variety to its own page alone though I no doubt have failed occasionally.

If we currently propagate them there should be a blue link or at least it should be highlighted in blue (though we wont sell them until they flower that we will show a picture of in the newsletter so you can determine if its the one you want).
Deborah was asking 3/10/15 about Great Maidens blush. If I get an opportunity I will show a picture of the cuttings here that I hope rooted.
Janet asked me 3/11/15 about Leda Painted Damask
Wendy asked me 3/10/15 what are the youngest cuttings of Rugosa I sell (also said she had problem germinating rugosa seed). All of our roses are propagated in one gallon pots then divided into one gallon pots (answer to question). The following picture links should show you pictures of cuttings from hybrid rugosa roses that have rooted (we stick 4 cuttings in each pot). If you look closely youmight be able to tell how many cuttings rooted in each pot. We will probably divide them each into their own 1 gallon pot sometime this summer, cutting them back in July.
Lois asked about roses that she had asked about 4/22/14 Alba Semi-plena, Rosa rugosa alba and Great Maidens Blush. Semi-Plena, AGNES Hybrid Rugosa Rose Alba' Rugosa Rose Great Maidens Blush ALBERTINE ALCHEMIST or ALCHYMIST 'DORTMUND' 'FRUHLINGSMORGAN'. If we root cuttings from any of these varieties I will email her along with everyone else giving priority, once they reply, to those who signed up first. We will stick 4 cuttings from a numbered 'Aucubaefolia' in a 1 gallon pot and try to root them, then sell them to James at $5 per rooted cutting undevided (2 in a pot would be $10, 3 in a pot $15, etc.). Actually I'll probably do as many pots of this as I have cuttings to stick 4 to a pot and later I can sell them as is or I can devide them, cut them back and sell them as $10 for a 1 year old and $15 for a 2 year old.

We only ship 1 gallon (sold out of 2 gallon right now) in flat rate priority mail boxes (check picture and cost at bottom of this page) so I would suggest you reduce this order to 2 plants.

I dont know if I'll have any or not. If the roses bloom and you are on this list for one of those that bloom in a one gallon pot I will call you back on the phone giving priority to those nearest the bottom of this list.

About the ALL-PICTURE-NEWSLETTER by andyvancleve
Potential customers subscribe to my free subscriber only newsletter. Around the 10th of each month I send a link to all my subscribers (click on the link and it will take you to an available web page where I am placing the newsletter). Every time I interact with the plants or we work in the nursery I take pictures that I add to the newsletter with comments between (clicking on the small picture opens an image large enough to save as wallpaper). If you see something that interests you ask me about it in an email me .

We can send 2 one gallon potted plants in this size for around $18.00 postage as of June 2014. A 1 year old in a 1 gallon is $10 and a 2 year old in a 1 gallon is $15 (but we usually dont send the 1 year old because it has not flowered yet). Occasionally we sell quarter gallons for $10 each or thereabouts because I can fit so many of them in this priority mail box (ask about it). Because we stick 4 cuttings in each one gallon pot then divide them once they have rooted these divisions from the one gallon are called quarter gallons. Dont send any money until I ask for it, Nothing is available right now though you might check the pictures of roses being identified link and ask me in an email if any of them are available.
Contact me if you have any questions.
