Crop 263 Pictures taken in January at the Flowering Shrub Farm in Voorheesville, NY 12186. We propagate and grow for retail sale many hard to obtain roses, lilacs, blueberry bushes, and report how we are doing to potential customers via monthly newsletters (larger plants are usually available for pickup during the plant sale). In January, February and March we are propagating plants from divisions and root cuttings. A link to the newsletter I am working on this month is at the bottom of the page. The pictures below with comments I am rewriting this month are probably from previous years unless they have been recently over-written.

We grow lilacs on drip line for several years until they flower so we can verify the variety from the flower (then we paint the variety name on the side of the pot and attach a yellow locking label with an abreviation of the name). Then we cut them back and place in a larger pot so that they will grow back with multiple stems.

Roses that are dependably hardy in Voorheesville to zone 3 or zone 4 may be potted into a 45 gallon pot as a source of cuttings.

These Lilacs that were cut back last year in March 2016 and may be divided and repotted this year. These james macfarlane are being planted in a mass we can divide one out occasionally if needed.

In winter 1, 2 and 3 gallon roses are stored inside cold boxes to protect the roses from being eaten by deer, mice or rabits.

The number in the center of each cell allows me to find a variety, and take a picture with that number in a corner of the picture locating it nicely.

cold box 1 in the cold frame and Charles Joly Lilacs in the field that we will cut back and maybe divide in order to double the quantity. Divided Lilacs will be potted in 3 gallon pots and half at least will be returned to the field and not sold.

Large Lilacs in 45 gallon pots are being located in a corner of the property (these may or may not be for sale). Potting shed has red door where we pot plants or stick cuttings at benches behind those sliding windows that we can open to transport plants out to drip lines in the field or to a misting bench. Cold box on left has been closed for winter with poison baits inside. Roses in 7 gallon pots that we will use to take cuttings from, are stored pot in pot for winter surrounded by mulch.

I take these top pictures in Winter from the second floor of our house so I dont have to go slipping and sliding around on the snow and ice. Additional pictures below are taken when I have access and someone to accompany me in case I fall down. Click the picture for a larger image.

We top dress each rose burried in the ground with two inches thick of moo doo (composted cow manure) to mulch soil. In spring we will wash it into the soil.

I can open the lids to inspect the condition of the mouse baits and add to them if needed. One and two gallon potted plants, mostly roses, that may be sold mail order next May through August, are packed in here as winter approaches, poison baits among them to help prevent mice from eating them. In April or May when its warm enough we will sort them by variety and take pictures for the newsletter.

I continue to take pictures as long as snow doesn't prevent me from having access. We are also doing interior work in the barn and potting shed.

Its a little slippery at this time of year but so long as the snow isn't too deep I can still walk up into the upper field among lilacs on drip line to get these pictures.

When plants flower I attach a numbered label with an abreviation of the variety name printed on it with a paint pen. Agnes is the Hybrid Rugosa rose Agnes, Aucub is the variegated Lilac 'Aucubaefolia'. Contact me to ask about availability sending your phone number and address so I can call back.

Then there are those Lilacs in big pots that we use as a source of cuttings in May. They may be cut back to only a few inches while still dormant and allowed to produce many upright soft wood sprouts that might be taken as soft wood cuttings in May. The Lilacs to be divided will be cut back in March or April and divided.

Name of the variety is shown on a label. Cabbage rose we planted in the front bed to be used as a source of cuttings someday.
