For the three months May, June and July we are selling lilacs, roses and more. The newsletter I am working on this month is at www.floweringshrubfarm.com/garden.htm and includes a link to "what we do and when we do it". The pictures below are probably from previous years unless they have been recently over-written.

My nursery is in the middle of Voorheesville, NY surrounded by local residences so we propagate and grow plants that are very disease resistant, washing insects from their leaves with water. I propagate and grow plants from my catalogs that my customers have requested, are locally hardy and disease resistant. We sell 2 year old plants in one gallon pots mail order and if they dont sell gradually repot into larger containers that at first we may use as a source of cuttings but later may sell from the nursery. Once plants are 2 years old and have been identified from the flower, I will attach a price sticker to the side of the pot that is easily seen in a picture.
junesourcesmall.jpg, twoyearoldssmall.jpg
On the left you see Roses that we will use as a source of cuttings in July, August and September placed on drip line in the field. On the right you see a picture of all the plants that are two years old as these will be the ones we sell if they flower proving what variety they are (there is always a certain level of anxiety on my part over how I could have screwed up on the labeling and the flowers blooming will solve that). Once they are clearly identified from the flower I stick a price label to the side of the pot that should be easily seen if you click for a larger image.
twoyearoldssmall.jpg, soldtosmall.jpg (click this image and if you see your name on a plant contact me right away).
On left is the old chicken house that we now use for mist propagation (the building inspector suggested that we repurpose the old chicken house rather than tearing it down and building a greenhouse so we will probably side it with plexiglass in back but leave the structure as is in front for esthetic reasons). On the right is a picture of plants that have been identified and had a "Sold to" sticker attached (if your name is on one of these and you still want the plants you should contact me right away). When I ship plants out I usually send them on a Monday so they should reach their destination by the end of the week (and I'll retake the "sold to" picture so you can see your shipment gone)..

Two year old roses are usually sorted by type (albas, climbers, damasks, gallicas, rugosas, etc). Those types each have a picture that can be taken showing how many we have. They are not for sale until they have flowered proving the variety (we will stick a price label to the side of the pot).

On the left are our one year old roses being grown in the coldframe where we store all our one gallon plants in winter. I hope to get a bit more of the foliage removed from the surrounding trees soon to bring in a bit more sunlight. As two year olds flower I will attach a yellow, individually numbered label and photograph them all together saving them as twoyearolds followed by the days date dot jpg. or the variety name (if the variety name I can add the picture to that varieties individual web page).

These are all flowers on large plants that we take cuttings from but the pictures also allow me to compare with two year old rooted cuttings that may flower soon.

Large plants in seven gallon pots are placed on drip line in the field to be a source of cuttings.

Liza is interested in picking up some William Baffin at the nursery. Here are some growing on drip line.

Each day that I have flowering 1 gallons I will take a picture and save it as that day. You can click the picture for a larger image to study more closely or save as wallpaper. I will verify the variety and print it on the pot with the paint pen along with the year it was potted. Remember we wont sell them until they are two years old and have previously flowered. If you recognise one you should go ahead and email me about it though it may already be sold or just not old enough.

These apothecarys roses wont be for sale til they are two years old (note date they were first potted on side of pot).

Superba lilacs were used as a hedge in victorian times, pruning the hedge after it flowers. We will repot these into 1 gallons. Duchess de Montebello as a source of cuttings in a 45 gallon box or maybe cuttings stuck in 1 gallon pots or 2 inch liners.
juneduchessdemontebelloflowersmall.jpg, june18small.jpg
We are starting to send out mail order where people have paid for them and where the inspector has inspected them.
june19small.jpg, junealainblanchardsmall.jpg
Sometime in July I will start cutting these back and sticking the cuttings.

Kathryn of Oklahoma want a 'Duchess de Montebello' and as I dont have any except my six foot tall plant in a 45 gallon pot I'll take cuttings from it in August. You see it here newly opened and a few days later after it fades to white (different flowers on the same plant the picture taken on the same day).
10301koniginvondanemarksmall.jpg, 11048redrosesmall.jpg
The red rose on the right is probably 'Tuscany' but I wont be sure until I have watched it fade to see if its a Tuscany Superb. These are in 3 gallon pots and will probably be divided this winter.
