One and two gallon own root roses are over wintered in these cold frame boxes surrounded by peat moss and if newly rooted they are kept in plastic zip lock bags. As we root plants we keep them in plastic bags opening them for inspection and to allow the air in the bags to replace itself. Frames without tops are used for 3 gallon sized roses or larger. Click the picture for a larger image that can be studied more closely or saved as wallpaper.

I will try to take a picture like the above each month during the winter (and I will over-write the picture each time I open the box to clean out leaves or surround the pots with peat moss. As I add more Azaleas and Rhododendrons I will add more boxes (each of these is 4 feet wide by 12 feet long). Whenever possible we top dress the plants with fresh snow so it waters them as it melts. There are both Rosebay Rhododendrons and Pinxterbloom Azaleas in the azalea box. The blueberry box is mostly lowbush blueberries. There are no larger Pinxterbloom Azaleas than these in 1 gallon and 4.5 inch pots at this time.

In spring those that flower will be labeled with an individually numbered yellow label and some will be sold at the plant sale. Those that have fewer than three stems may be cut back and transplanted into a 7 gallon pot. Those that dont sell may be placed outside the basement window to be pulled inside, divided into several smaller plants and made available for mail-order in one or two gallon pots.

In winter I divide large plants and pot them into one gallon pots to make them available for mail order. The plants that are being divided have already flowered proving the variety. We will mark the variety name, date divided and the number of the plant the division was taken from on the side of the pot with a paint pen.

We have these really large plants in front of the house potted into 45 gallon pots that we take hundreds of cuttings from in July after they finish flowering. I order roses that I either cant find any more in the nursery or that subscribers have requested. One of each will be purchased, trench layered and have cuttings taken in July. www.floweringshrubfarm.com/roseorde.htm

januarycoldframeboxaftersmall.jpg, januarycoldframeboxshutsmall.jpg

I open the coldframes after a snowstorm and shovel snow in that will water plants as it melts, provide "poor mans mulch" and help keep the inside of the coldframe warm when its cold outside or cool when its warm outside.

januaryrowhsmall.jpg, januaryshovelssnowsmall.jpg

We shovel snow so we have access to everything.

The bags around the base of some pots indicaten that they are cuttings still being rooted. Watch for a new picture sometime in June when I will over-write with the current inventory picture.

3. ownrootdamaskssmall.jpg, 4. ownrootgallicassmall.jpg

I start over-writing these pictures as soon as it changes like if I sell a bunch or add a bunch of new varieties (the date the picture was taken is in the lower right hand corner of each picture). I propagate plants all year transplanting to a larger size when they outgrow the previous pot (call me if you want on my cell phone at 518-526-9101 or 518-526-9978).

5. ownrootrugosassmall.jpg, 6. ownrootmuskssmall.jpg

Smaller than 1 gallon size in 2013 was $5. 1 or 2 gallon was $15 for a 2 year old as measured from the year on the side of the pot, $10 for a 1 year old.
