HOME PLANT SALE LILACS ROSES NEWS GROW ORDERING CONTACT

augustreddoorsmall.jpg, soldtosmall.jpg

Took me a couple days to send the newsletter out. Finished morning of 11th at 9 AM. In the "soldto" picture Cora D. asked for a 'Ludwig Spaeth' and an 'Agincourt Beauty' the actual plants that we sent to her are shown though we trimmed them to fit the box.

We put new doors on the barn in 2015 allowing me to just drive in rather than having to race under the sprinklers (automatic doors too). I have been taking cuttings, inserting them in 2 gallon hefty plastic bags and sending them out to the greenhouse. Curt comes wed or thurs to work on the mist propagation bench that is not done yet.

augustsinkpotssmall.jpg augustsinkwindowsmall.jpg

I pot plants at my bench, soak them and stick them out the window.

augustwaterlinesmall.jpg, augustpropagatorsmall.jpg

Installing water line for the mist propagation bench on the outside of the building so its easy to spot a leak. I created this propagator for the interim, soaking paper towels on bottom.......

On left above is a picture of our 2015 crop that wont be for sale for 2 years at least. I like to keep them long enough so that those that are not going to do well can die in the nursery (some will have just gone dormant so we will keep them through the winter and see if they grow next spring). Those that are left will be cut back to strengthen the roots.

On right packaging plants in a flat rate priority mail package to be sent to a customer.

So first I take a picture of plants on drip line that we will be taking cuttings from.

Cuttings inserted in 2 inch pots on a mist bench..........

cuttingscamieuxsmall.jpg

I can send plants to the following states without having to have them inspected; Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming. Other states require additional charges and an inspection by the Agriculture Dept.

cuttingscityofyorksmall.jpg,

I usually label the bag while taking the cuttings then paint the variety name onto a individually numbered label and place in the bag. Next year when we pot up the 2016 crop we'll note these numbers on the side of the pot with a paint pen.

Cuttings in plastic bags to be sent to a greenhouse.........

cuttingshenryhudsonsmall.jpg

So theres this subscriber who emails me that he sees I have small cuttings of Henry Hudson and asks if he can have one. I write back; 1, I take cuttings at this time of year to send to a greenhouse (I take pictures of the cuttings in plastic bags), 2, the greenhouse tries to root them and sell those that rooted back to me next spring for $2 each, 3, I mark the year on the side of the pot and grow them for two years, 4, those that flower and are clearly identified from that flower will have a price tag stuck on and then sold mail order. I do this every year so I probably will have the variety your interested in growing but I wont sell it until its been clearly identified from the flower.

Sometimes I stick 4 cuttings in a 1 gallon pot and place them in a bag or on the mist bench. If multiple cuttings root they will have to be divided.

So I told this customer heres this picture of mail order lilacs that I have available at this time. www.floweringshrubfarm.com/lilacsbymailbig.jpg

She emails me back she wants two others that are not in the picture. I reply that if they are not in the picture they may still be available but at greater cost. She would have to drive here a minimum 150 miles one way and buy roses in 3 gallon pots for $25 each. Her best bet would be to buy a couple now and tell me what other lilacs she would be interested in buying next spring so we can divide them next march (and take a picture) and send them to her in May or June.

cuttingsmariebugnetsmall.jpg

I'll be taking cuttings from this 'Marie Bugnet' next week but I want the bush to grow back better filled out.

around 35 Red Oak trees that I plan to pot in 3 gallon pots next year and place out in the field under drip line. We will write the year (2015) and "Red Oak" on the side of the pot with a paint pen soon.

Potential Customers subscribe. Each month I send them the latest email link to the newsletter, information as to what is blooming and sometimes an update telling them when I am open.

We grow plants to sell at our plant sale. Read my notes on the zone hardiness numbers I use. Do we do mail order? Check my picture-newsletter Want to purchase? email me.

I am fertilizing these larger roses once a month with Rose Tone. Those two year old roses that did not flower and were not sold will now be re-potted into larger pots and join these on the drip line. A potential customer has been trying to buy 3 lilacs from me when I can only fit 2 in a box.
