I stick at least 4 cuttings in a 1 gallon pot, the variety name and the date the cuttings were stuck painted on the side with a paint pen. Compare the date this picture was taken (in the lower right hand corner of the picture) and the date on the pot. Sometimes it takes as little as 2 weeks to root while at other times it can take 8 weeks but as long as it still has leaves or at least the stem isn't blackened the cutting is still healthy.

We use seed starting mix, perlite and sharp sand in various combinations to root cuttings from roses starting in spring with soft wood cuttings, through July with semi-mature heal cuttings and then sticking hardwood cuttings in a slit trench in fall. The really large roses have hundreds of cuttings taken to use for mist propagation in a greenhouse but many of the stock plants we take cuttings from only have 3 or 4 cuttings to offer at any one time so we stick them in a one gallon pot in a ziplock bag. On July 12, 2013 I stuck mixed Hybrid Rugosa cuttings. If the flower is purple its 'Magnifica', Silver its 'Fru Dagmar Hastrup' or pink its 'Sarah Van Fleet'.

Monday, July 8, I am taking cuttings from each of the following to send to the greenhouse; 10319:36 cuttings Gallica Apothecarys rose, 10318: 17 cuttings Gallica Agatha Incarnata, 10320:23 cuttings Damask York and Lancaster, 10321:14 cuttings Gallica Cardinal de Richelieu, 10329:36 cuttings Father Hugos Rose, 10322:26 cuttings Pauls Himalayan Musk and 10323:47 cuttings Alba Semi-Plena.

When these cuttings come back from greenhouse in spring of 2014 I will pot them into 1 gallon pots with the 5 igit numbers on the sides then when they flower we will add a variety name. If there is only 1 or 2 variety names in the group I will write them on the side of the pot lining out those it isn't when it flowers.
