Apothecarys Rose

The picture above is the cuttings picture for apothecarys rose. whenever I pot apothecarys roses, relabel or sometimes when someone asks if I have any I go find them, group them together and take a picture to over-write the cuttings picture with. Once they flower and are identified positively I add a price sticker to the label. You should not buy them until they are 2 years old. the date first potted in a 1 gallon is shown somewhere on the label as a 12, 13, 14, 15 or 16 so a 14 would be two years old in 2016. Entry near bottom of list have their picture erased but you can click the blue link and go to a web page for that variety alone and the cuttings picture is top right.

They wont be sold until they flower and there is no guarentee that the one you want will flower or even if it has survived the winter. Watch the newsletter linked above (NEWS) where pictures of the flowering plants will be shown. Probably not available because I think the rooted cuttings of this variety died in winter. If they flower this year though I may call you back along with any others who expressed an interest I have noted on this page. As you are from California though I can only send plants to you in March or April while the plants are still dormant, bare root and inspected by the agriculture department. Comte de Chambord in gardens and commerce is sometimes 'Mme Boll'. Comte de Chambord is a cross between a portland rose x hybrid perpetual 'Baronne Prevost' and should be hardy to zone 4b, be 2 to 4 feet wide and 3 to 5 feet heigh and blooms best in cool weather.

As I look at the cuttings picture for Comte de Chambord I usually only over-write with a picture of the source plant on drip line when something goes wrong with the cuttings themselves. When roses are flowering in June if I identify any of this variety I'll try to call you back if you left me a phone number. Then I will attach a price sticker near the variety name on the pot and over-write the cuttings picture. The less cold hardy a plant is the less likely cuttings are to survive the winter.

The pictures above show we took cuttings from semi-plena in 2015 so we may be potting those into one gallon pots sometime in June and the duc de guiche that are still alive may flower at that time (I'll may add a picture of that flower in the newsletter with a numbered yellow label attached) possibly proving the variety or not (and I may over-write both cuttings pictures at that time maybe). You might read below that if I identify a semi-plena or a duc de guiche in bloom I may stick a price to the pot near the variety name and over-write the cuttings picture above (if you have left your phone number with me I may call you back to notify you at that time). I'll probably do a search on this page for any varieties that flowered, look up the phone numbers in my printed emails and call back any that gave me their phone numbers (but its a good idea to at least be watching the newsletter).

Great Maidens Blush Felicite et Perpetue Goldfinch

These rooted cuttings pictured here were at the time newly transplanted from two inch pots and they wont be for sale for sure until they have flowered sometime in June at the earliest or whether they have survived the winter as we have not yet removed them from the cold box (click on GROW above). Probably the least expensive will be $15 in a 1 gallon pot and then have to be shipped to you for $20. Usually the $5 size is reserved for blueberry bushes and native plant seedlings when we have them. If you check the pictures of 'Felicite et Perpetuae' and 'Goldfinch' you will see that as of spring of 2015 several new rooted cuttings in two inch pots were flowering but shouldn't be for sale for at least another year or two.

I used to buy native plants from two nurseries that have since gone out of business. Another nursery in Washington state provided me with lowbush blueberries but now insists that I purchase a thousand dollars worth at a time so now I plan to grow everything from seed and we are not quite set up for it yet. I have the locations of several native azaleas in the wild that one of our friends may be able to hike to, to collect the seed. Then in the fall when we take our misting bench apart we can set it up again in the basement for seed starting. Watch the newsletter linked above (NEWS) for pictures of us setting that up and plants growing. Most of my time is currently spent propagating historical roses and lilacs from cuttings. Send me your phone number if you'd like me to call you back when we have native azaleas or blueberries.

If you go to the blue link above there are two pictures. One on the left of the flower and one on the right of potential rooted cuttings. The cuttings picture shows a one gallon pot of cuttings stuck in 7-25-14 (I know because the date cuttings were stuck is noted on the side of the pot with a paint pen). Another picture of rooted cuttings will either over-write this one soon or the cuttings failed or they didn't survive the winter. There are no other plants available at this time (if there were they would be seen in the picture). Go to the "NEWS" link above and click it to see if we have taken the plants out yet. As we do stuff in the nursery I take pictures and add them to the newsletter then add comments. I will probably add price stickers to some plants by the end of June and over-write with new pictures of them.

When we take plants out of their winter storage they will be sorted again and if these plants have survived the winter a new picture of them will over-write this one. Go to the "NEWS" link above and click it to see if we have taken the plants out yet.

The problem is that we have to propagate Harisons by collecting a sucker or through root division. I'll go up to the letter S or maybe Cass Hill Rd in the Hill Towns and see if the property owner will allow me to collect a few suckers (look at the 'Harisons Yellow' with my daughter standing in the fore ground on the page linked above). Then I'll wait until next spring and divide each collected Harisons in half and sell one half of each. If they let me do it I'll show pictures in the Newsletter sometime.

I wont know if we have any until it happens. Notice in the picture above it shows that I sent cuttings out to a greenhouse (loose cuttings in a ziplock bag with a numbered label inside) just like I do every year. If the cuttings root they will be returned sometime in May or June though they might not be labeled as such so we'll have to wait until they flower for proof. Once I pot up returning plants I will take their picture and this one will be over-written with the new one. Once they flower or are identified I will attach a price sticker to the side of the pot similar to the price sticker you can see on this 'Congo' Lilac (click the picture for a larger image). Usually the price for a 1 gallon is $15, 2 or 3 gallon is usually $30 but I might charge differently according to how many I have and If I only have a few they might all end up in 3 gallons. Complicata William Baffin Pauls Himalayan Musk Alchymist

You asked for a fragrant Climber for zone 5, 2 to 3 feet across and 8 feet tall. I suggest a large shrub perhaps a pillar that you can tie to your trellis, cutting away all else. I particularly like combining more than one variety like 'William Baffin' (pink semi-double) with 'Pauls Himalayan Musk' (white) and 'Complicata' (single pink). The Complicata adds fragrance while its in bloom, the William Baffin provides a long season of color if no fragrance and the Himalayan Musk provides a white foil that might conceivably be replaced with something else hardier if you like.

I will show a picture in the picture-newsletter (so if you see such a picture call me right away). If you dont get back to me I may decide to put a price sticker on it making it available to anyone.

I will show a picture in the picture-newsletter (so if you see such a picture call me right away). If you dont get back to me I may decide to put a price sticker on it making it available to anyone. But if you see an 'Agnes' or 'Henry Hudson' flowering in a one gallon pot feel free to contact me and ask about it.

I need your phone number and address Jeff. If some rooted cuttings of magnifica become available for sale and if I remember I will call you on the phone to ask if you still want them if I have your phone number. I can use the date above to look up a printed copy of your email I have with others on my desk in order of the date but with my hand disability its to hard to email so I ask for phone numbers.

City of York

As roses flower (probably in June) some of them may be City of York. If so (and if its 2 years old) I may call people back (when I have the time) who have requested it to see if they still want it. If they do I'll place a label on the side of the pot with their name on it and show a picture in the newsletter (so if you see such a picture with your name on it call me right away). If you dont get back to me I may decide to put a price sticker on it making it available to everyone. But if you see a "City of York' flowering on a one gallon potted rose feel free to contact me and ask about it.

We dont sell roses until I place a price sticker on those in June that flower and are at least 2 years old. Usually 1 gallon pots will have a $15 price sticker stuck on and 2 or 3 gallons are usually around $30. Clicking on each of these blue links should take you to a page for that variety alone.

I of course grow all my rooted cuttings in 1 gallon, 2 gallon or 3 gallon and wont sell any unless I have stuck a price sticker to the side of the pot. We dont stick the price sticker on until they have flowered verifying the variety usually sometime in June. Those that are available now or that I am selling now in March came up for sale last June when they flowered, had the price sticker stuck on and are left over or we arranged last summer to send them bare root while dormant early this spring in March and April.

We dont propagate Lilacs from cuttings (except rarely) so we dont have plugs or liners, instead we propagate from root cuttings by dividing lilacs that have previously flowered (proving the variety) and planting the divisions in one gallon and three gallon pots. The varieties you have chosen unfortunately are not in stock except as large plants in the field that have not flowered yet (Michel Buchner shows some plants flowering last May so maybe we will be dividing some this March). The cuttings pictures shown above will be over-written in spring with a new picture that shows plants growing vigorously in one gallon pots and if I decide to sell them I will stick a price sticker on the side of the pot. The last picture to the right will show the lilacs by mail picture as of a date in the corner of the picture (click it for a larger image).

If you click on the blue link you'll go to a web page for that variety alone that has pictures I add from the newsletter (I use the newsletter to show potential customers what we are doing now). As you see in the cuttings pictures above I have chosen to add those cuttings pictures that show plants in small pots though they wont be for sale until I have attached a price sticker on the side of the pot (as plants start to flower those that are at least two years old will have price stickers attached). I will sort plants by variety on the benches and over-write the cuttings pictures occasionally as I sell plants (those with price stickers or sold stickers will be in front).

This page should allow you to check the status of plants you are interested in quickly.

Duchesse de Montebello

If you are on this list you have sent me a requested list of plants and your phone number to call you back with (makes it easy to look up the email you sent me that I have printed and keep in order of the date). So if some of these bloom in June I will go to the bottom of the list and make up a bunch of "Sold" stickers to place on the sides of the pots then take a picture of them in a lineup to place here in this list. If you see a picture showing a plant with such a sticker and your name on it you'll call me back right away (if one does not bloom the mention of the variety on this list means I am likely to take even more cuttings from it this year).

Apothecarys Rose

I plan to go into the plant box and see if I can find some Apothecarys roses (tthat bloomed June 13) in March (If so I'll probably show a picture with a sold to label on it). I'm going to ask the inspectors if I can bare root a plant (to prove it has no grubs) and then during the inspection add new sterile soil mix dampened before we ship them.

Marcia K of CT February 18, 2016

Leverkusen, Apothecarys Rose,'Geranium'

If a bunch of these are identified in June I'll go to this list and starting at the bottom (the bottom of 2014 maybe) attach "Sold To" stickers on the side with a name (I'll put the plant back in front of others of that variety and over-write with a new cuttings picture). If you see your name get back to me right away as I may offer it to someone else in a few weeks (I will probably call you on the phone to notify you if you are one of the lucky ones). Once I have no more who have requested those plants I will stick a price sticker on and anyone can ask for it.

Dave Clark of VA February 13, 2016

This cuttings picture as of february 2016 shows one of 8 Harisons Yellow we use for propagation from root cuttings. In spring while the plants are still dormant but the soil can be worked we will dig around looking for rooted suckers that we can then plant into one gallon pots (sometimes we dont find any). If we succeed I will over-write the picture with several in one gallons that we will cut back and watch for growth that if it happens will then have "SOLD TO" stickers applied to the sides of the pots possibly with your name. I work here alone with help that comes in once a week and use this page as a reminder.

This picture as of february 2016 shows Pinxterbloom Azalea seedlings a couple years ago before we ran out (check the date the picture was taken by clicking this small picture that should open a larger one and looking for a date in a corner). We may have a couple left or not burried in the cold box that you can see a picture of in the newsletter. Normally we would have collected seed from local pinxterbloom azaleas and started them under artificial light in the basement but we failed to collect the seed this year because no one reminded us and I have to see where to collect seed (I think theres a plant in Duanesburg). Most seed sources are only available after rather strenuous hikes that I cant do any more so I may have to ask Richard to do it.

We wont sell any that dont have a price sticker attached but as plants flower in June and July we will stick prices on any that can be clearly identified from the flower. As plants are identified I will search for them on this list and call back anyone that I have a phone number for if I have time. These pictures are gradually erased at the bottom of this list as they are added at the top (the flower and cuttings picture are still available just click the blue variety name link.

I plan to add this year 4 Autumn Damask , 1 'Leverkusen' , 1 'William Lobb' , 2 'Centifolia' & 1 'Albertine' in 7 gallon pots to the plants on drip line that we take cuttings from. Somebody asked about prices of course it all depends on what the price sticker says but I will be adding sold stickers on those plants that were signed up for on this list so its usually around $15 in a 1 gallon I try to sell 2 at the same time because 2 fits the flat rate priority mail box (below) we send them in for around $20 shipping and handling (thats usually $30 for 2 roses plus $20 shipping and handling). Of course some people arrange to pickup more than that then let me know when they will show up and drive here to get them.

plantsbylargeprioritymailsmall.jpg

We can send 2 one gallon potted plants in this size box for around $20.00 postage and handling as of June 2016.

I can send plants to Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Other states I have to send plants bare root while dormant and have the Agricultural Department Inspect the plant and give me a phytosanitary certificate (That wont happen until the month of march or april if I remember after the plant is identified and costs me $25). Always a good idea to call up and remind me.
