GARDEN ALL PICTURE NEWSLETTER by Andrew G. Van Cleve at the flowering shrub farm.

June 26, 2016

After july 4 call me at 518-526-9978 before coming as I will be taking and sticking cuttings. I change the days date to the current one whenever I edit this page or add new pictures (bookmark this page so you can revisit each week to see what we have added). Click on the picture and it may open a larger version with more detail.

HOME PLANT SALE LILACS ROSES NEWS GROW ORDERING CUTTINGS LIST CONTACT

junecoldframesmall.jpg and junepottingbenchsmall.jpg

I visit this newsletter almost every day to rewrite what I wrote yesterday, add a couple pictures taken in the nursery or to edit one of the main pages linked above to make it easier for someone to access information (next month many of the pictures will show cuttings being taken and stuck 4 to a 1 gallon pot and placed on our mist propagation bench). People who are interested in the plants we grow send an email with their phone number and a list of the plants they want. I reply with a link to this page or others linked above then go and edit the pages so that they can find the requested information (later I'll call you back by phone so give me an idea of what time zone your in). I add your email to a mailbox labeled 2016 so I can look up your phone number if I have to call you back (check LIST above).

pots up and in sink

Two inch rooted cuttings are potted, placed in sink and watered. The label should have the year first potted and some indication of what variety they might be (these numbers indicate they may be La belle sultane or ispahan). Once they flower we'll know for sure. Check out these pictures taken in June of plants at www.floweringshrubfarm.com/plants.htm

pots out and coldframe

Placed outside through a window that slides open, then transported back into the cold frame where its easy to water. The foliage on the trees overhead will be further reduced so plants can continue to get 5 or 6 hours of sun each day but not so much that we have to increase watering.

june14small.jpg and city of york

June 14 shows an apothecarys rose in bloom already with price sticker attached to the yellow label and the City of York mixed cuttings from last year (these may turn out to be City of York but I dont believe I took that many cuttings from that one variety so when they flower we may know).

june 17 and rugosa alba and rubra mixed until they flower and may be seperated.

junefourseasonssmall.jpg and junelabellesultanesmall.jpg

This four seasons autumn damask rose is blooming in the upper field on drip line that we will use as a source of cuttings in July, august and september. The la belle sultane in one gallons is a mix of several varieties taken in front at 40 Voorheesville and may include la belle sultane, ispahan and great maidens blush.

Dr Eckener and New Dawn

Only the ones with a price sticker on the label are likely to be for sale if they are one or two years old. If you ask me in an email for the availability for a variety I will probably go and take a picture like the above. On the other hand if I'm sold out these pictures will probably show cuttings of this variety that have been stuck in the mist propagation bench.

junecelestialalbasmall.jpg, junecardinalderichelieusmall.jpg

These roses in 45 gallon like this Celestial alba and the gallica rose Cardinal de Richelieu will be used as a source of cuttings that I take in July, August and September. In June I am potting rooted cuttings in two inch pots taken last year.

Celsiana damask and Rotesmeer rugosa

More roses blooming on drip line in the upper field that we will use as a source of cuttings.

Comte de chambord? and four seasons

Great Maidens Blush and Surpasse Tout

konigin von danemark and pink grootendorst

juneamericanpillarsmall.jpg and juneharisonsyellowsmall.jpg

I take these pictures, add them to the newsletter then comment over the next several days while editing the pictures. Look for flowering plants among the one gallons. Its quite cool and though there are plenty of buds we will have to wait and see if they will open.

junejensmunksmall.jpg and junenevadasmall.jpg

All roses hardy to zone 3 will have one or more growing into these 45 gallon pots on drip line that we will take cuttings from in July and August. As plants flower I will over-write these until I get good pictures with flowers on. Then in July I will show plants that have faded flowers that we will take as cuttings.

junerotesmeersmall.jpg and juneschneezwergsmall.jpg

Initially plants we plan to take cuttings from are planted in 7 gallon grip lip pots on drip line (then in winter they can be stored pot in pot), later when they are well rooted we may pot them into a 45 gallon gallon or plant them in the ground. When I find out there is greater demand I ramp up my production rate by planting many own root plants that I have propagated into these 45's. Slightly less hardy plants will also be planted in 45's that are however buried in a hillside but still under drip line.

availableblueberrysmall.jpg and junedriplinesmall.jpg

I have purchased aound 750 lowbushblueberry plants (V. angustifolium?) that I will get next May 2017. If you want any in a 2 inch pot I'll be selling them for $5 each (go to this blueberry link to see pictures of lowbush with berries on, fall foliage and as they will appear when they first arrive). Send me your name, address and phone number to be added to the list (if I dont get enough requests to sell a couple hundred plants when they come in I may cancel the order).

in back and june 18

Sold to Susie P. on June 24 and waiting for a check. $15+$15+20=$50 made out to Azalea House and sent to PO Box 49, Voorheesville, NY 12186. The number on the side starts with the year first potted in the one gallon (13 is 2013 and 14 is 2014). Yellowing of the leaves was caused by letting them get a bit to dry so they wilted, then when they were watered again those leaf parts turned yellow.

May 31, 2016

On the left above shows flowering Lilacs for sale in back of the house at 40 Voorheesville Ave. On the right are many of the cuttings I rooted last year placed in one gallon pots and marked with this year followed by a guess at the variety name (yellow labels on top wont be for sale until they flower proving the variety maybe). If you want to come buy plants give me a heads up by calling my cell phone at 518-526-9978. If I'm not in the potting shed I'll probably be out watering or labeling flowering plants in the field and it will take around 5 minutes or so to come in to the plant sale location at 40 Voorheesville Ave in Voorheesville, NY 12186 across from the Voorheesville Diner and next to Stewarts Sandwich Shop.

City of york and Prairie Princess cuttings I potted (note the date picture was taken in the lower right hand corner of the picture). I over-write the cuttings picture for each variety as I pot them. Click the cuttings link at the top of the page for more cuttings pictures as I pot plants.

La Belle Sultane and New Dawn. At first the cuttings picture may show rooted cuttings in 2 inch pots, later as I repot, label and photograph they may show them in 1, 2 or 3 gallon. Note the year first potted into a 1 gallon on the label as 13, 14, or 16.

'Michel Buchner' Lilacs on left and Lilacs in back on right.

This shows how many Michel Buchner Lilacs we have at the plant sale (I may copy this to the cuttings picture for this variety).

potting bench and those I potted may 19

Potting rooted cuttings of roses that may be placed on drip line in the field (zone 5 roses will usually go into 3 gallon pots while zone 3 or 4 roses will usually go into 2 or 3 gallon). I attach a yellow label with an abreviation of what we think it is (city would be 'City of York' and prairie would be 'Prairie Princess' for example) and the year ('16) that they are being potted so I can take pictures from above (in winter they will be packed closely into my insulated cold boxes and the label will allow us to continue to see what they are). Geodisks will be added (circles of landscape fabric inserted on top of the soil but under the yellow label to control weeds in the pot) before I place the pots in the field on drip line for the summer (as plants flower or become available for sale I will add a price sticker and take a picture to over-write the cuttings picture with).

Pot in pot and roses or cut back Lilacs going on drip line.

Transferring roses from pot in pot (as trees overhead leaf out) to the drip line in full sun while lilacs that are flowering on the drip line are being taken to the plant sale by pickup truck to be sold. Later in the year we will cleanup under the drip lines a bit where in May theres so much dead vegetation you cant even see the weed mat under the pots.

'Aucubaefolia' and 'Ludwig Spaeth'

charles joly

No Charles Joly for sale this year as we have only around a dozen to propagate from.

'Clarks Giant' and 'Nadezhda'

Clarks Giant is not available this year (this flower is on the plant we take cuttings from). We bring plants in from the field that are flowering and place them in the back yard at the plant sale to be labeled and sold. Some will be cut back after being labeled so they form a thicket of stems that can either be divided in winter (to be sold mail order probably) or potted into larger pots to be sold for more money next year.

Edward J Gardner and Mme Lemoine

Click the blue link beneath these pictures for more information or to see additional pictures.

'Congo' and 'Monge'

Congo and Monge are often quite similar with Congo opening somewhat red and fading to purple, Monge opening purple.

'Krasavitsa moskvy' and maylilacssmall.jpg

We carry in several pickup truck loads of Lilacs from the fields whenever Curt is here and sort them as best we can at the plant sale location.

'Adelaide Dunbar' and 'Anabel'

I only have the one 'Anabel' in a 45 gallon pot that we will use for cuttings in the future. And 'Adelaide Dunbar' we are all out of.

'Excel' and 'Maidens Blush'

These Syringa hyacinthafloras 'Excel', 'Maidens Blush', and 'Purple Glory' are all plants we only have at this time to take cuttings from and to take pictures of.

'Purple Glory' and 'Paul Thirion'

This Paul Thirion Lilac is purple but I have not gotten a picture in the right light yet.

Sarah Sands and Sensation

Sarah Sands is very hard to get a picture that is truly reflective of its very dark purple flowers and often the camera sees blue instead of dark purple. The Sarah Sands plant this flower is on is the one we take cuttings from (badly labeled as Dark Night) and in June as new growth is six inches long I'll take cuttings.

'Belle de nancy' and 'Dark Night'

I will over-write these pictures of Lilac flowers every few days so you can see when the flowers actually open. We start the PLANT SALE as the lilacs we will sell flower so you can see the flower your buying and smell the fragrance. 'Dark Night' spelled in an interesting way is not very dark at all but it is distinctive.

Michel Buchner and Ami Schott?

Aucubaefolia and Congo Lilacs by mail that were cut back while still dormant in early spring and will be easy to reduce a bit more so they might fit a flat rate priority box. As they get larger I may divide them in half into their own 3 gallon pots next spring to be returned to the field or we will transplant them into larger pots for more money. I also use these as a source of cuttings to propagate from.

Edward J Gardner and Monge Lilacs by mail like those above.

maycuttingsrootedsmall.jpg and maycomparesmall.jpg

Rooted cuttings came back from the greenhouse 5/10 and I ripped the cartons apart, throwing the waste to the side to recycle later. Two crops of Lilacs thought to be Congo and Monge are very similar.

maypottingshedsmall.jpg and mayreddoorsmall.jpg

I placed the rooted cuttings in this box for security until I get them potted up. This will be the misting bench sometime in June but these rooted cuttings should be under drip line by then.

mayrosarugosaseedlingsmall.jpg and maysecurityboxsmall.jpg

Around 30 of Rosa rugosa seedlings in 4 inch pots that we will pot up into 1 gallon size and sell for $15 or $20 each were placed in a secure location.

After I have compared this picture with other Prairie Princess I will pot them in 3 gallon pots and place them in the field under drip line. The two inch rooted rose cuttings have been placed in a secure box that is easy to water through the expanded metal top. Many very hardy types will be potted into 1 gallon, everything else in 3 gallon (as plants flower and prove their identity we add a price sticker but you should look for plants that are a couple years old and have a price sticker).

Fantin Latour and Kazanlik

This Kazanlik is going into a large pot to be used as a source of cuttings. Fantin Latour will be potted into a 3 gallon and placed in the field under drip line.

Ispahan and Leda

Ispahan will be planted in a 1 gallon mostly as it is hardy to zone 3. Leda will be put in a large pot to be used as a source of cuttings. The yellow label is mostly being used so plants can be packed closely together and you can still check their identity.......

mayweedmatsmall.jpg and maybarnsmall.jpg

Curt setting up for the plant sale by spreading the weed mat and arranging lilacs brought in from the fields. Below here you'll see pictures of the flower buds on lilacs that we will over-write every few days until they flower. Click on the Lilacs link above and check the new cuttings pictures I am taking of plants we are lining up by variety at the plant sale.

maycoldboxsmall.jpg, maycoldframesmall.jpg

I am fertilizing these roses in the cold box so they are more likely to flower and be identified. Many will go out into the fields under drip line as soon as help starts arriving.

maylilacwalksmall.jpg, mayfrontporchsmall.jpg

mayinbacksmall.jpg, mayreddoorsmall.jpg

This area in back will be covered with weed mat during the plant sale and those lilacs that flower this year will be labeled, brought in and arranged so its easy to water or sell them. The box near the red door will become the mist propagation bench.

Potting Bench and Harisons Yellow

The cuttings will go onto the mist propagation bench (just outside the window) while potted rooted cuttings may be taken out to the field to be placed under drip line. Bags of fertilizer, potting soil and pots can be stored under the bench.

Rail Trail and Station

Just a short distance from the plant sale on Voorheesville Ave is the beginning of the Rail Trail along the right of way of the old D&H Railway. Albany County plans to pave it sometime making it better for bikes.

Tunnel

This tunnel has a row of lilacs on one side and an apple espalier on the other.

April 27, 2016

aprilaucubaefoliasmall.jpg and aprilkrasavitsamoskvysmall.jpg

Aucubaefolia has gold and green leaves and double blue flowers. The bare canes in the back ground may be large damask roses that we use as a source of cuttings and that will flower sometime in June. Krasavitsa moskvy has double white flowers from pink buds (these pictures of buds may show how close they are to flowering so you have an idea when we will start the plant sale). Click the PLANT SALE link above and read about the plant sale we have every year starting when Lilacs flower.

budludwigspaethsmall.jpg and april harisons yellow

Lilacs showing current level of growth for those who want to come buy lilacs during the plant sale (I will over-write this again and again until it flowers). We dont open until they start to flower. These flowers are on really large plants but as those for sale start coming into bloom I'll attach a numbered label next to the flower that will appear in the picture alongside the flower (check the date this picture was taken in the corner of the picture).

aprilcelestialalbasmall.jpg and apriljensmunksmall.jpg

Had a request for these so I went out in the field and found them in 45 gallon pots that I pruned, added fertilizer and soon I will add compost (i want lots of heal cuttings so thats why I prune differently then you would). In July they should add a few cuttings to the misting bench.

aprilbelgianfencesmall.jpg and aprilespaliersmall.jpg

I trained this belgian fence back in the 1990's. This horizontal T espalier is still being trained a little bit every year by letting it set fruit then cutting back to the spur that bears the fruit.

aprilpottingbenchsmall.jpg and ownrootramblerssmall.jpg

Curt put these boxes together and placed the bare rooted plants in the fridge (I have difficulty working with my hands so curt does this stuff while I water, feed and take cuttings). I took this picture of own root ramblers in the cold box.

inspectionreceiptsmall.jpg and aprilinbacksmall.jpg

Plants were inspected and the receipts inserted in these invoice windows. Inspectors along the way can look and see if they were inspected rather than having to open the package and look. Now I have a 14 day window of opportunity to send it in. This picture "In back" will start out showing the barn but I'll soon over-write it to show us arranging the weed mat, then later bringing in Lilacs that will be for sale as they flower. Sorry about gramatical and spelling errors but the the web site software has no spell checker.

aprilbarnsmall.jpg and aprilreddoorsmall.jpg

On the left of this garage you can see my potting shed also shown on the right with a red door. Soon we will set up the mist propagation bench outside here so I can stick cuttings inside then pass them through the windows to be placed under mist. The box you can see in the foreground in the red door picture is the propagation bench closed up for the winter.

aprilpackagingsmall.jpg and aprilapothecaryssmall.jpg

On the right this bare root apothecarys rose was sent to TX. Until then we kept it dormant in the fridge.

aprillilacwalksmall.jpg and aprilpricestickerssmall.jpg

As roses flower I attach price stickers to the sides of their pots near the variety name.

Washing the soil off until its bare root then keeping cool in the fridge (and moist in the plastic bag).

cold box and cold frame

Opened this cold box to see how they are growing, started fertilizing with bloom buster while watering. Bloom buster promotes roots and buds.

Lilacs on side and cuttings apothecarys

Lilacs in 25 gallon pots lying on their sides in back we will repot into 45 gallon size. They were rooted into the ground out front and we severed the anchoring roots in March to open up the front of the house so you can see the sign.

aprildriplinesmall.jpg and aprilmichelbuchnersmall.jpg

One of these two 'Michel Buchner' Lilacs (10082 and 10083 shown flowering in the Michel Buchner page) was bare rooted this week to be shipped out on april 24 maybe.

aprilreddoorsmall.jpg and aprilcoldframesmall.jpg

I will be over-writing these pictures as the leaves start coming out and flowers presenting themselves so you might want to reload the page in case your computer has any pictures cached.

aprilbarnsmall.jpg and aprilcutbacklilacssmall.jpg

On the left you can see my work shop to the left of the barn. On the right are lilacs that flowered last spring and were cut back last month (some will be sent out bare root while still dormant). The cut back lilacs picture is over-written throughout the month until you can start seeing the new growth.

aprilfrontporchsmall.jpg and aprillilacwalksmall.jpg

You can see Ispahan in a 45 gallon pot in front of my Van. The lilac walk is to the left of the house. Roses in 45 gallon pots that we will use as a source of cuttings will be lined up in front of the porch so you should still be able to see the sign over their tops.

aprilpotinpotsmall.jpg and aprilredoaksmall.jpg

In winter roses in 7 gallon pots are stored here pot-in-pot. Red Oaks we started last year in 1 gallon pots.

soldtosarahjsmall.jpg, aprilpaperworksmall.jpg

These lilacs were sent to Sarah J. bare root april 24 maybe after we received a check and after the Ag. inspector had checked them. Went to the accountant the following week so we had to get the receipts in order.

aprildriplinesmall.jpg, aprilthefarmsmall.jpg

Plants in large pots on drip line in the field can be labeled with a yellow label when they are flowering then get pulled while still dormant and sent bare root mail order.

cuttingscongosmall.jpg, cuttingsdarknightsmall.jpg

One of these Congo sold to someone in Ohio.

cuttingsedwardjgardnersmall.jpg, cuttingskrasavitsamoskvysmall.jpg

Lilacs that flowered last year and were labeled are cut back this spring to be sold at the price stuck on the side of the pot. These pictures are taken again later in April and by then you should be able to see new growth.
