Both Fan training and Belgian Fence begins with an unbranched one year old whip (what we call an unbranched maiden) that has been cut back in early spring of the first year to around 18 inches at the topmost of 3 buds.

For fan training, In the second year we cut back each of the 2 laterals (any stem growing from a larger stem) to 1 foot and remove any other laterals that may have formed.

The laterals are not cut back for a Belgian Fence.

Both plants are then trained onto a trellis (wires) in a 5 gallon pot and put up for sale at $30 for those of you who want to train your own.

Some will be transplanted into 7 gallon pots, grown to the top of the trellis and in time a 5 tree belgian fence will sell for $250 or a single fan for $50.
