Cuttings taken on a particular date at the Flowering Shrub Farm in Voorheesville, NY 12186. I propagate one variety of plant each day and label the container they are in with the date the cuttings were taken (clicking on the top picture may open a larger version).

I take a 3 gallon pot and attach a date label to the side as shown in the picture above. I write the name on the reverse side but keep this record in case it fades. Each pot is filled with a soil mix composed of peat moss and perlite and fertilized with something that stimulates root growth only. I carefully soak the soil mix and let it drain. Each cutting is dusted with root hormone and inserted in a hole I create with a pencil. The soil is tamped so it closes around the cutting. Each pot is placed in a clear garbage bag and put somplace where the light is indirect. 6 weeks later I remove the bag and fertilize with Espoma Rose Tone. The cuttings will be left undisturbed for a couple years except for occasional weedings and fertilizings.
